Thirteen Trivandrum Plays

"Thirteen Trivandrum Plays" is a monumental collection of ancient Sanskrit dramas traditionally attributed to the legendary playwright Bh?sa. These works constitute a vital link in the history of Indian literature, representing some of the earliest surviving examples of classical Indian theater. The plays encompass a wide variety of genres and themes, drawing heavily from the rich narrative traditions of the "Mahabharata" and the "Ramayana", while also featuring original social plots and romantic intrigues.Among the masterpieces included in this collection is "Svapnavasavadatta" (The Vision of Vasavadatta), widely regarded as one of the finest plays in the Sanskrit canon for its psychological depth and dramatic tension. Bh?sa's style is characterized by its brisk pace, vivid characterization, and emotional resonance, offering a distinct contrast to the more ornate conventions of later classical drama. This collection serves as a profound exploration of ancient Indian ethics, politics, and spirituality. "Thirteen Trivandrum Plays" remains an essential resource for scholars of Indology, world drama, and classical literature, providing a window into the artistic brilliance of an era that shaped the cultural heritage of South Asia. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
